After a 2-1 loss to Mexican side Club León in a heated first leg of the Concacaf Champions League Final on Wednesday, May 31, LAFC now host the second leg at BMO Stadium on Sunday, June 4.

A 96th minute goal by forward Denis Bouanga gave the Black & Gold a crucial lifeline heading into the return leg at BMO Stadium after two first half goals by Club León put the home team in front early as LAFC struggled to string together opportunities.

LAFC find themselves in a familiar position as the Club went down 2-0 in the first leg of the 2020 CCL Round of 16 before a Carlos Vela double and a 79th minute Diego Rossi goal helped seal a 3-2 aggregate come-from-behind win for the Black & Gold at BMO Stadium

The teams clash for the right to call themselves the best team in the region. But it is not just bragging rights on the line – both teams are looking to not only win their first-ever CCL trophy, but also to secure a spot in the 2023 and 2025 FIFA Club World Cup tournament.

CLUB LEÓN IN-DEPTH

Led by Argentinean head coach Nicolás Larcamón, León are playing in their first-ever CCL Final and have shown they are a dangerous team having nine different goal scorers with 15 total goals enroute to the final.

Forwards Victor Dávila and Ángel Mena lead Leon in scoring with three goals each in the tournament while forwards Brian Rubio and Elías Hernández have contributed two goals each as well.

Leon is expected to be without Colombian midfielder Yairo Moreno as he was subbed out in the first game in the 8th minute due to injury.

LAFC WILL WIN IF

They can put their struggles from the first leg behind them and feed off the energy created by the 3252 at BMO Stadium. The Black & Gold are nearly unbeatable in big games when playing at home, but they will lean on Captain Carlos Vela’s leadership, who has been here before in 2020.

CLUB LEÓN CAN WIN IF

They are able to withhold the pressure LAFC will be applying as the home team needs to score. Leon will most likely come out in a 4-4-2 lineup and play a low midblock on defense in an attempt to disrupt the LAFC game plan and secure their first-ever CCL trophy.
