LAFC and Real Salt Lake will be meeting for the fifth time in regular season play. The Black & Gold have a perfect 4-0-0 record against their Western Conference rivals, including a pair of victories at Rio Tinto Stadium, most recently a 2-0 win on August 17, 2019.

The two sides have also met during the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs and the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. RSL earned a 3-2 win in the Knockout Round of the 2018 postseason on November 1, 2018 to earn its first-ever win over LAFC. A year later, LAFC would down Real Salt Lake 3-0 in the Fourth Round of the USOC at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The match against Real Salt Lake was originally scheduled for August 26 but was one of five MLS games postponed in support of the players standing in solidarity with the Black community.
