Following its unbeaten run through Leagues Cup Phase One, LAFC returns to MLS regular-season play with a Saturday night home match against SoCal neighbors San Diego FC at BMO Stadium. LAFC is currently tied atop the Western Conference with 34 points, while SDFC (21 points) sits in 13th place. 

The last time these two met back in April, LAFC came back from an 0-2 deficit and Ryan Hollingshead scored at the death to earn a point in San Diego.

LAFC enters Saturday’s rematch with a record of 16W-6L-8D in all competitions in 2026, including a 10W-5L-4D mark in MLS – good for fourth place in the MLS Supporters’ Shield race behind Nashville (first), Miami (second), and Vancouver (third).

The Black & Gold is unbeaten in its last eight games in all competitions, and has outscored its opponents 15-4 in that span.

FORM CHECK

The Black & Gold was handed a tough draw in Phase One of Leagues Cup - the annual, 36-team MLS-vs.-Liga-MX tournament – but responded with a PK-shootout win over tradition-rich Chivas de Guadalajara on August 5, a last-minute victory in regulation time over current Concacaf title-holders Toluca on August 8, and Wednesday’s comeback result against Querétaro, which currently has a 2W-1L-0D record in the Liga MX Apertura table.

LAFC’s penalty-kick shootout victory over Querétaro at midweek pushed the Black & Gold to the brink of the Leagues Cup Quarterfinals, but the club’s seven points (out of a possible nine) fell just short, as LAFC finished in fifth place in the MLS table, with only the top four clubs advancing to the knockouts.

San Diego finished with six points in Leagues Cup Phase One after falling 3-1 to Club América in its opening match in Mexico City and registering two home wins against Tijuana (1-0) and Puebla (3-2). SDFC got its five goals from five different players in the tournament, with LAFC Academy product Luca Bombino scoring against América.

INDIVIDUALLY SPEAKING

Denis Bouanga found the net against Querétaro on Wednesday to pull LAFC level in the second half, giving him seven goals in his last nine matches across all competitions.

Bouanga is well on his way to adding to his MLS-record three straight seasons with 20-plus goals. The French-born Gabon international’s 10 MLS goals this year are just three behind Golden Boot leaders Nico Fernández Mercau (NYCFC) and Petar Musa (FC Dallas), who each have 13. 

MLS All-Star Son Heung-Min currently ranks second in MLS in assists with 10, one behind Evander (FC Cincinnati). 

Centerbacks Ryan Porteous and Nkosi Tafari rank fourth and eighth in the league, respectively, in clearances, with 40 and 34. Porteous also leads LAFC in completed passes, with 852. The man behind them, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, conceded just one goal in his two Leagues Cup starts and leads all MLS goalies in clean sheets (10) and clean sheets across all competitions (12).

DANGEROUS DANE

In San Diego’s last MLS outing on August 1, the second-year club drew with Minnesota United on the road, 1-1, with MLS All-Star and 2025 MLS Newcomer of the Year Anders Dreyer equalizing from the penalty spot in the 64th minute. San Diego, which finished first in the West last season, has endured numerous injuries in its sophomore year in MLS, but Dreyer’s quality and durability have remained constant. Dreyer has followed up his torrid rookie season in 2025 (19 goals, 19 assists) with seven goals and nine assists so far in 2026. His assist total currently ranks third in MLS behind Evander (11) and Son (10).

Last month SDFC signed Tunisian winger Elias Achouri as its third-ever Designated Player. The former FC Copenhagen man made three appearances for Tunisia in this summer’s FIFA World Cup but has yet to take the field for his new side.

HISTORY AHEAD

With four more goals, Denis Bouanga (75 goals) will pass Carlos Vela (78) for most MLS regular-season goals in LAFC history. Bouanga became LAFC’s all-time top scorer across all competitions last season. To date, he has tallied 118 total goals in Black & Gold. 

Bouanga’s brace against Sporting Kansas City on July 25 made him the fourth-fastest player in MLS history to reach 75 regular-season goals:

LAFC WILL WIN IF

Its three-man front line connects. Just prior to Leagues Cup, LAFC had reeled off 11 goals in four MLS matches, with Bouanga, Son, and the right-wing combo of David Martínez and Jacob Shaffelburg linking up in and around opposing penalty areas. Mexican defenses caught on, and clamped down on LAFC’s attack during Leagues Cup. 

San Diego prefers to play freely, holding possession, connecting passes, and occasionally leaving vast space in behind. If the Black & Gold can drive into that space and finish clinically, its first win against its young neighbor could follow.

SAN DIEGO CAN WIN IF

Dreyer does Dreyer things. The last time these two clubs met in Los Angeles, on August 31, 2025, marked Son’s much-awaited home debut at BMO Stadium. Dreyer put his own mark on the evening by registering a goal and an assist in SDFC’s 2-1 win.

This year LAFC has tightened its defensive discipline, conceding the third fewest goals in MLS (behind conference leaders VAN and NSH) and ranking second in MLS in clearances. 

Led by Lloris and his centerback rotation of Porteous, Tafari, Aaron Long and Eddie Segura, LAFC allows just 3.84 shots on target per 90 minutes, fourth-fewest in the league.
