The Black & Gold have been granted the opportunity for revenge in the Round of 16 in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup, as they have an early opportunity to match-up against one of two teams to defeat them this season – the Galaxy. This time, a berth in the Quarterfinals is at stake for the city rivals as they meet for the first time in the oldest soccer tournament in the United States.

LAFC advanced with a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers in the Round of 32, while the Galaxy defeated NISA side California United Strikers FC.

This intense rivalry already includes a lot of history in a short period, as the Galaxy hold the edge in the series with a 6-3-5 record. LAFC is still looking for their first road victory in the series, and this winner take all battle would be a great place start. The Black & Gold did eliminate the Galaxy in the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs in the only knockout match-up between the clubs.

The Galaxy is coming off a 3-0 loss on Sunday at home to Houston and have lost their last two matches at Dignity Health Park. Expect the Galaxy to come out fast and furious to make up for their disappointing home showings that finished with fans booing them off the field.

These two clubs are familiar with one another, with former Mexican National Team teammates Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Carlos Vela squaring off for what will be the fourth time ever, including this seasons match-up and two games in the UEFA Champions League in 2013. Former LAFC defender Raheem Edwards, who appeared in 27 games for the Black & Gold in 2021, provided the Galaxy with the game winning assist at Dignity Health Sports Park back on April 9.

GALAXY IN-DEPTH

The Galaxy has some of the best scoring threats in MLS in players such as Chicharito, Mark Delgado and Douglas Costa. They are an aggressive team that loves to try and control the possession of the game. Former LAFC defender Raheem Edwards has had success this season so far, leading them in assists. The Galaxy will look to balance the pace of the game with their ratcheted-up intensity that an electric atmosphere this series always produces. As the action gets heated on the field and loud in the stands, strategies will be thrown out the window and this will become a true battle of Los Angeles.

LAFC WILL WIN IF

They are able to limit mistakes and impose their control of the game from the beginning. LAFC heads into this one playing with a ton of confidence, but also is aware they need to get off to a quick start on the road.

GALAXY CAN WIN IF

They get high intensity and precise performances from their key players, giving them leverage in their offensive buildup. Douglas Costa is a danger on the right wing who has played at the highest levels of international football, and he can have a huge impact on the match if LAFC does not produce enough pressure defense.
