Vela First LAFC Player To Score At World Cup

Vela Celebrates World Cup Goal 2018 IMG

A historic goal from halfway around the world.

Carlos Vela opened the scoring for Mexico against South Korea in Matchday 2 at the World Cup in Russia. It's the first goal by an LAFC player in a World Cup. Also, only the second time a non-American MLS player scored in a world's biggest tournament - Tim Cahill of Australia and the NY Red Bulls scored twice in 2014.

Vela cooly stepped to the spot after a South Korean player was penalized for a handball in the box. With the goalkeeper going the opposite direction, the LAFC forward powered his shot into the back of the net to give Mexico a 1-0 lead.

Back home, Vela's LAFC teammates took to Twitter to celebrate.

The goal is Vela's first across two World Cup tournaments. In 2010, Vela played in two matches for Mexico before leaving the tournament with an injury. In two World Cup matches in Russia, Vela now has a goal and has helped lead El Tri to a perfect record with six points.
