LAFC suffered a 3-1 loss to Minnesota United FC on Sunday night in its final regular-season game of the year at BMO Stadium. Sergio Vásquez scored late for LAFC, which lost at home for just the fourth time in all competitions this year.
Ahead of next weekend’s season finale in Seattle, LAFC is now 12W-10L-11D on the season for 47 points, and remains in sixth place in the Western Conference.
Minnesota United, which would have been eliminated from playoff contention with a loss, took a 1-0 lead just before the half-hour mark when JoaquÃn Pereyra hit a volley past Hugo Lloris from the center of the box with his team’s first shot of the game.
Five minutes later, a quick counterattack ended with Kelvin Yeboah heading the ball into the path of Cherrion Valerius who volleyed home from 10 yards out to make the score 2-0 in the 34th minute.
Pereyra added his second and Minnesota’s third in the 81st minute, hitting a low, left-footed shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection before settling into the far corner, putting the game out of reach.
Vásquez pulled a goal back for LAFC in the 90th minute when he reacted quickest to a deflected cross inside the penalty area and hit an overhead kick that went into the net off the post to make the score 3-1. That goal was his first in an LAFC shirt since signing with the club in late August.
The Black & Gold will close out the regular season on Saturday, November 7, when the club heads north to take on the Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field as part of MLS Decision Day. That game kicks off at 4 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on Apple TV, as well as Coupang Play and SPOTV for fans in Korea. Local radio coverage will be available on 710 AM ESPN, the ESPN LA app, KYPA 1230 AM (Korean), and 980 AM La Mera Mera (Spanish).
